In six weeks, children are supposed to be sitting in classrooms inside seven schools in Independence and Sugar Creek and learning reading, writing and arithmetic.

But, a dispute over who owns those schools and when they'll be handed over has put that in jeopardy.

What do you think? Whose side are you on?

The decision has already been made. KCMO School District needs to ust give it up and let Indep do their thing to get ready for the new school year!

Yeah, what grounds does Kansas city have to keep these schools? Money? I think they have made enough money off of doing nothing and are still getting paid for the actual schools that now Independence has to spend the money to fix up AND bring the kids up to a 3rd grade education in the 11th grade, before Christmas.

Kansas City shcool district proves what they are about once more, "money" is their objective always has been, always will be. Educating children is not their priority, that is a disclaimer.

i think its abunch of BOOGEDY, i mean i go to vah horn and i will be a senior next year when school stars and i just want all this to be over and done with, in my opinion the kcmo district doesnt do their job right, and if they did then maybe we would have the 7 schools in the indep district already and wouldnt have to go though this stuff, and from the veiw of a student let me tell you, that kcmo is playing a kidss game and just need to amp up and quit making exuses about it and hand over the titles, utilities and keys to indep so we cant get on with this and be able to contiinue our eduacation with better teachers and a better curiculuum, and thats coming from a proud Van Horn High School Falcon

The KC school district should be ashamed. They continue to show their disregard for the education of our children. With a reputation of misuse of finances, questionable school board members, revolving superintendants with outlandish salaries and perks, the district continues it's downhill slide. I wouldn't even consider letting my children attend their schools.

the kcmo district is only worried about there wallets not the kids.today they made that obvious.i attened them schools growing up, and nothing has changed.the schools were nasty in the 80s just like they are today. but some where somebody is living good on tax payers money, now it is over with and there mad.who cares, thank you indep school distric for rescueing us from the greedy kcmo district that has been milking our tax money for there own personal accounts. tso p

I think you should go to schools in whichever district you live. On the bickering between who owes who for the buildings, I think they need to go back to the time when the KCMO schools took over. Did they get money from the Indep school district to cover costs or did Indep get money from the KCMO school district? Whichever district received money years ago, should be the one to pay the other district this time around. One district should not get paid twice. Also, if the Indep district did not have enough money to prepare the schools properly for the students, including maintenance and upkeep, then why on earth did they push so hard to get the kids moved? That was very poor planning. Leave it up to adults to screw up everything!

I am writing in disgust of this whole situation involving the Kansas City Missouri School District & Independence MO School District, also the state of the Kansas City Missouri School District. I am wondering, why did the KCMSD negotiate with the Independence School District back in November, when as now they are saying they don’t even own the buildings they were negotiating to turn over. That seems so absurd. What are they trying to do? Bankrupt the Independence School District like they tried to do to the State of Missouri back in the desegregation lawsuit? I think the arbitration panel gave them more than what they should have. They squandered all those millions of millions of dollars and now they are trying to make Independence pay them also. There is another question that needs answering, and that would be what is going to happen to the other schools KCMOSD has in that area like the old building Anderson Alternative school was housed on 35th St in Independence. Nova is currently housed in the building across the playground from NRC/Korte. What about West Rock Creek which is now in Kansas City, it used to be part of the old Rock Creek School District before it was annexed. I am sure KCMOSD didn’t pay for that one either. What happens to those schools? Why does the KCMSD Building Corporation, a Non-profit organization think they need to be compensated for the cost of the schools anyway, they didn’t pay for them. As for the debt that these buildings are used to secure, it sure wasn’t due to any upgrades to these schools. The upgrades to buildings during the

desegregation lawsuit were paid for by the State of Missouri, of which these buildings were not upgraded near to the extent of the school buildings in the City of Kansas City. Most of those schools were tore down and rebuilt. The most done to these building were remodeling and about half of the schools in Independence did not even get air conditioning. About ten years ago the bleachers in the Van Horn High School were condemned. And I am pretty sure there hasn’t been any improvements to this school since. I am wondering how close it is for the whole building to be condemned.
I have lost all respect for the Kansas City Missouri School District, not just due to their inability to educate the children they are entrusted too, but their lack of being able to even keep the buildings in their district up to standards of other school districts. I see a lot of the schools that were tore down and rebuilt during the desegregation lawsuit are in need of serious repair. I would think with brand new buildings they would be able to keep up with simple maintenance but I see they are so busy trying to make the parents happy they can’t make hard decisions, like closing schools and using the money to make repairs and upkeep to the existing buildings. After visiting some schools I find it very hard see what is going right. Teachers are left to sweeping their rooms and cleaning sinks and other work areas instead of concentrating on educating just so the district can save a few bucks. Some custodians were complaining about having to sweep up pencils and crayons, paper & shavings on t

the floor. Excuse me but whose job is it to keep the floors clean? The teachers? I am pretty sure most elementary schools have 1 maybe 2 custodians to clean the entire school in the evenings, that is not nearly enough to sweep let alone clean 30 to 40 classrooms and the rest of the building.
I worked for KCMOSD in the late 1990’s and was very impressed at the time. They had a lot of programs and it really seemed they were making headway. Then, the desegregation lawsuit was ended and it appears so did all the progress they were making in giving the children of the City of Kansas City the education they deserve. I am disgusted enough to where I am almost to the point of calling for dissolving the Kansas City Missouri School District and piecing it out the surrounding districts. Maybe they can educate our children and make up for what the current District has been unable to do in the past who knows how many years. It is clear throwing money at the district doesn’t work. I think it would be a good idea for Independence School District to let KCMOSD have the Van Horn building and house the Middle and High School in the Nowlin building, if that is possible. I am told KCMOSD is going to open up another high school in the East Elementary School building (formerly High School, will be K though 12) to take Van Horn’s place. Why do they need another High School? The High Schools they have aren’t vacant enough? While they are messing things up why don’t they just make all the schools K through 12. That ought to make a lot of people happy, especially those parents of Kin

of Kindergarteners. I don’t think I would want my six year old going to school with 17 and 18 years olds. I do not place blame on the employees of the School District as they are only doing what they are allowed or have time to complete. I am thoroughly angry at the Board of Directors, past & present. It appears from the last election that the only people who want anything to do with the district are those who want to siphon money from its coffers for the themselves and friends and then take off and leave it in shambles, and it looks like they ran out of people trying to do that. It is clear to me with these new developments the school district does not care about the education of our children, especially when they are trying to lock 2,500 children out of schools that don’t even belong to them.
Kansas City, Missouri School District Board of Directors please stop acting like a bunch of spoiled little brats that didn’t get their way and let Independence do what they need to get the schools ready to start educating these children before something really drastic happens to your School District and the children of Kansas City start suffering more than they already are. KCMOSD your district is now smaller and should be a little bit more manageable so please concentrate on the children left to your care and let Independence carry on with what has been entrusted to them.

KC School District graduation rate below 50 percent, study says
March 31, 2008

Fewer than half of Kansas City School District students make it to graduation, according to a national study that ranked Kansas City 40th out of the nation's 50 largest cities.

The report by America's Promise Alliance, released today, used data from the 2003-04 school year to calculate a graduation rate of 45.7 percent for Kansas City, compared with the national average of 69.9 percent.

'It's not the place where we want to be,' district spokeswoman Cynthia Wheeler-Linden said. 'What matters is where we are going.'

Where are they going?

Time for the State to take over!

As I said before KCMOSD is a JOKE! When I listened to the news yesterday it made me sick. Independence is trying to get into those schools and assess what needs to be done and get them ready for students next month. KCMOSD is shutting them out. The schools are in pathetic condition. I don't see how Independence can possibly have them ready in just a few weeks. And KCMOSD is doing their utmost to put a stop to any progress being made. Now I say that is really putting the education of our children first, wouldn't you? Shame on you, KCMOSD! No way can you make me believe that YOU put the CHILDREN'S interest first!
I have a question. Even though KCMOSD owned those schools, they were in the city limits of Independence, Mo. Couldn't Independence inspect those schools to make sure they met city code periodically?? How in the world were they allowed to get in the shape they are in??

I was born and raised in Independence and still do and have actally went to school at one of these schools that are being converted back to Independence, Mo. district. To me it's just common sense these schools should have NEVER been considered Kansas City, Mo. schools. Very simply, the physical street address of each of these schools ARE Independence, Mo. How they ever became part of the Kansas City, Mo. district is still very unclear, and a big mistake that should have NEVER happened to begin with along with all of the busing issues.
In comparing the classroom settings, Independence district verses Kansas City district...I have attended both growing up and let me tell you the Independence district is a far better district by leaps and bounds. When I was required to attended one of these schools that had been converted to Kansas City, Mo. district even though I resided in Independence, Mo. it was purely AWFUL.
The classsroom was like a continual three ring circus between the teachers and the students. Even as a child I could not believe my eyes everyday that I attended school. The teachers could not teach because they were busy trying to control the students, daily. A total joke. Thank God it was only for a partial school year. My brother and I would constantly complain about the atmosphere to our parents.
While my family lived in Independence, and we were required to attend one of these schools that had been taken from Independence and given to Kansas City, Mo. we did not even have bus transportation, but the children being taken from Kansa

-continued- we did not even have bus transportation, but the children being taken from Kansas City, Mo. and sent to Independence, Mo. had plenty of bus transportation. While our parents had to drive my brother & I to school everyday & pick us up.
Has any one thought about what Kansas City, Mo. school district purchased these schools for way back when the transfer took place? I gaurentee it was not 12 million plus, if anything at all. These school buildings have NOT been maintained over the years and it is very obvious just by looking. This is going to be a project for Independence to cordinate. These schools are slummy, and Kansas City, Mo. district should be happy we are taking these schools back. It has always saddened me when driving by these schools. Not the best enviroment for the children.
I hear that Kansas City Schools are not even accredited....now how in the world does this happen. Kanas City, Mo. schools up and running but NOT accredited? What about when these children go to apply for college, "Oh sorry the grade school through high school that you attended was not accredited, we can't even consider you for this college."
Kansas City schools have never had their act together and I don't see it changing any time soon. Some one is obviously lineing their pockets with money and forgetting about the children in the school system.

My daughter put my granddaughter in the "magnet school" at Central High and what a horrible experience that was. My granddaughter was a very studious girl an wanted to learn. She took her studies seriosly. She complained to my daughter about the disruptive kids in the class and the teacher didn't do anything about it. She said he acted like he was afraid of them. One day several girls decided they wanted to go to the library to view a film so the teacher dismissed them. They returned shortly because the film was not available that day. They were rowdy and my grandaughter quietly said "shhh we are studying" and the girls to exception to that. They were ready to pounce on her. The teacher called from the front of the room and told all of them to go to the hall to settle their differences! Of course the girls (6 of them) were ready to go and were taunting my granddaughter to go. My grandaughter just sat there - scarred out of her wits. She went home that day sick to her stomach and having horrible asthma attacks.
My daughter and son-in-law went to the school the next day to confront the principal and the teacher. That was a joke. Ended up they could not guarantee the safety of my grandaughter so my daughter and son-in-law pulled her from school. That's what the KCMO schools are like. That's why the teachers are making huge salaries; they couldn't keep them otherwise. How pathetic. No discipline at all. Makes you wonder what home life is like.
KCMOSD needs to let Independence have the schools and get on with teaching our children. Let KCMOSD get on with looking toward break

I am now a working mother and that pretty much defines my life. I moved to Kansas City more than a year ago. Loves: friends, family, food, travel, sleep (miss it) and, I admit, TV (reality, House, Office, Flight of the Concords).
