I am a strong believer in free speech.   I think that censorship is always a slippery slope to walk.    I also am a strong believer in avoiding smearing political figures.   A new book about to be published has put these two beliefs in direct conflict!

Curtis Sittenfeld is about to publish AMERICAN WIFE, a new novel based "loosely" on the life of Laura Bush.    It is not an overly flattering portrait and it is extremely graphic in it's description of the main character's sex life.   THE PROBLEM IS...IT'S A NOVEL.    (That means it's not all true!)    While I might be able to understand if the writer was trying to make some statement as an author....this seems to  be nothing more than  a cheap trick designed to sell books.   So to maintain our committment to free speech I would like to ask everyone to excercise another aspect of our rights.     The right of the consumer to ignore a product.

DON'T BUY IT.    DON'T PICK IT UP OFF THE SHELF & OPEN IT.    PRETEND IT NEVER WAS.   IF YOU GET IT AS A GIFT....TAKE IT BACK & EXCHANGE IT.

It wont hit the market until the acceptance speach of McCain. It is a deliberate effort to smear republicans and Laura Bush and make the public think she is a pervert and it is filled with lies. I am furious about it and think it should be pulled from all shelfs.

gimini210:

While I agree that it is filled with lies, I really think it is more of an effort to make money off of people wanting to read dirt about the wife of a man they hate! (Though I am sure Democrats are pleased with the release date.)

But in essence, I agree with you about it being wrong. I don't think it should be pulled because that is censorship. I just hope the sales tank!

I also have to point out that I wish you were as adamant about the "deliberate effort to smear" Democrats & Sen. Obama as you are on Republican attacks. It's the flip side of the same coin.

I try not to adjust my moral compass to fit the party of my choice. If it's wrong for Democrats to smear Republicans, it should be equally wrong for Republicans to smear Democrats.

So let's speak up about people calling Obama a muslim and the antichrist! (It doesn't mean you support them on issues...you just aren't willing to make up silly lies.)

Decide what for myself? That it really is fiction? Am I suppose to read something between the lines that might indicate that something in this fiction book is really true? Then it wouldn't be a novel would it?
It's a novel because if it weren't it wouldn't be covered by Freedom of Speech, it would be slander!

I hope it goes bust. I won't be wasting my money on it.
