I'm sure everyone has heard or seen The New Yorker cover, that is causing such a controversy.  This has been a satirical publication for many years and has never stirred up so much hype.  Their cartoons have jabbed at everyone from world leaders to baseball players.  Now all of a sudden they're being criticized about the cover with Obamas on it.  Aren't we getting just a little too sensitive?  Is this politically incorrect just because of their race?
It seems to me anyone that chooses to run for president should take a good long look at the fact they will be scrutinized, made fun of, even humiliated (in some cases) because of their background or because of a stupid statement that they make.  Frankly, I don't know if Michelle is a terrorist or not.  I don't know that Barrack is a Muslim or not.  I do know that as a child he was schooled in Indonesia, and that is the world's largest Islamic Country, with a 90% Muslim population.  Coincidence, whatever!
"If it's too hot, get out of the kitchen".  Even John McCain can make jokes and laugh at himself about being "very, very, very old".  I be if the The New Yorker would put him on the cover as Father Time it would be alright.
The comedians have had a ball with their jokes and comments about Bill Clinton, for years.  That's alright because he's white.  Now they have to walk on eggshells where Obama is concerned.  Are we to give up our "freedom of speech" and "freedom of the press" because of all the sensitivity or that it's "politically incorrect"?  Come on, this is America!
I say, if you choose this road, be prepared, keep a sense of humor and if you can't laugh at yourself, "pull up your big boy/girl pants" and move it or lose it.

Here's another hypothesis: Considering all of the hullabaloo about the cover, maybe Obama's campaign actually sent the cartoon to the New Yorker. It had the entire country in mental grid-lock for at least two days. It also made (some) people even more sympathetic towards Obama. (after all, he was being attacked so unfairly) It also feeds into the Democrats' asserion that the big bad Republicans will smear/attack Obama.
Just think about it...it would be a stroke of genius for his campaign to have "cooperated" with the New Yorker and it's cover.

While I agree that the thought of the New Yorker and the campaign cooperating for sympathetic press is genius; we have to figure the odds of that genius. After all we are talking about Democrats. I say its probably a no go on the odds.

nemokc, in all fairness, I tried looking up the website you posted, which stated "there was no information of any kind, access denied". What is the "flip side"? Since you're always so provocative I'm curious.

i suggest all of you that are under some kind of delusion that Obama IS a Muslim, read the article on Snopes (provided below)...

http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/muslim.asp

i'm so tired of people assuming, or taking someone else's word without finding the truth..
(although it seems to follow those of the Christian fervor.)

mabell:

Copy & paste the link I listed.

It links to a Horsey cartoon showing a NATIONAL REVIEW cover cartoon of John & Cindy McCain in the White House. Sen. McCain is sitting in a wheel chair looking 150 years old, barely conscious, mumbling "Bomb, Bomb, Bomb Iran" while Cindy McCaine is pouring hundreds of pills from a medication bottle saying, "Here John, take some of my meds to get you through the inaugural parade" A picture of Dick Cheney is over the fireplace where the Constitution is burning brightly.

NOTE: Before people start sending me hate mail, I DO NOT APPROVE OF MAKING JOKES ABOUT CINDY MCCAIN'S PAST PRESCRIPTION DRUG PROBLEM. But apparently the cartoonist felt if you are going to allege that Michelle Obama is a terrorist then it should also be fair game to reference the fact that Cindy McCain at one time stole prescription medication from her own charity for her own drug addiction.

(I WILL ALSO NOTE THAT WHILE I HAVE SOME PROBLEMS WITH CINDY MCCAIN, I APPLAUD HER CHARITABLE WORK AND HER RECOVERY FROM PRESCRIPTION PAINKILLER ADDICTION.)

nemokc, thanks for the enlightenment. The fact still remains that if you choose to be in the public eye, you have to be prepared for whatever comes. If you don't have the guts for it, then stay out.

Mabell:

I agree that you have to be prepared for what comes...I don't think that it means you can't speak out against the attacks.

Or is it ok to make fun of Cindy McCain for her prescription painkiller problem? I received an e-mail that showed a large pill & Cindy McCain's face on it. The caption read..."This woman steals pills from her own charity. NO WONDER HER HUSBAND CALLS HER A C*^NT!".

Is this ok? Or do we speak out against those types of attacks. (Unlike many of the Obama e-mails, it's all factual. She did have the problem. She did steal pills from her own charity. And John McCain did publicly call her a ....(you know).)

What about MoveOn.Org's General Betray-us ad? I read all sorts of comments from conservatives about how wrong that ad was...and I agreed. I even wrote about it at the time. Are those ads ok?

I think attacks of these type (whether from the right or the left) distract us from real issues. I think they are wrong & I think candidates have the right to speak out against such attacks. I also think it is the duty of all AMERICANS to fight such smear tactics because they distract from what is really important. And bottom line...it's our election!

nemokc, Everyone has a right to speak out. After all we're suppose to live in a country with Freedom of Speech. We all have different opinions, because we all perceive things differently. What kind of world would it be if we all felt the same?
Smear tactics have been a political way of life for decades. I'm not saying that I agree with it, but it's a fact.
That's why I say, "if you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen". Especially if you have something in your past that can come back to haunt you.
Like Bill Clinton, he'll never live down what he did and all kinds of jokes surfaced when Hilary was running for candidacy. So he was addicted to a dope, namely, Lewinsky and "Barbie" McCain was addicted to dope in the form of a pill. How many people in the Lime Light aren't guilty of some type of wrong doing? Whether it's Hollywood Celebrities, politicians, football players, baseball players, etc. Denying or lying doesn't make it right.
Of course these attacks distracts from the real issues, which is exactly what they're intended to do.

Once upon a time there was a "code of ethics" and "respect" for our fellow man. Maybe we should return to that. You have that select few that tend to carry things a little too far. Cartoons are meant to be funny. Wonder if Obama, Michelle, John, and Cindy found them funny. Hmmmmm

After all of the photos of Bush with horns, murdering people, Cheney burning the constitution, Reagan dancing on AIDS patients graves....Obama needs to grow a set and quit whining over pics. If he is elected President they will be tame compared to what will happen when he cannot even come close to CHANGING the world and living up to all his hype

Rockslide, did Obama comment on the cartoon? I missed that. It was my understanding that he made no issue of it, it was others who took exception to it.

Well if is not part Muslim, he sure has family that is not afraid to say so, check this information:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/20

It seems as if he had at least four years of his life in which he par took of Muslim in doctrine, besides having a family that practice it.
Saying Obama is not Muslim is like saying Obama is black, he is a combination of black/white Muslim/Atheist, but belongs to Christian Church. Did he just attend the Christian church to say he was a member so he would be accepted by America? I have heard that rapist use the same tactic, go to a church get people to have confidence in you and then you can commit your crime. Gaining confidence is the criminals tool.
