The mating season for deer is fast approaching, once again making them an unexpected hazard on our local highways.

At last count, I've seen 5 dead dear along I-35 from Brighton to the Hwy 152 exit.

Please use caution if you see deer standing near a road; their behavior is unpredictable, and they are likely to bolt right in front of your vehicle in a matter of seconds.

Does are being chased by the bucks, and the bucks don't stop for anything.

Hopefully, this will save you and the deer from having a very bad day.

I think the real problem is lack of visibility at night. The headlights on most cars only illuminate objects up to 150 feet in front of the car, and now I will do a little math to show you how bad that really is: assuming you are traveling at 55mph, with 1 mile per hour being 5,280 feet per hour, so 55mph would be 290,400 feet per hour or 4,840 feet per minute or...80 feet per second. There is where the problem is. Assuming your speed is 80 feet per second and your headlights only go out 150 feet ahead of the car, you would have slightly less than 2 seconds to react from the time you see the deer to avoid hitting the deer, and for the majority of drivers, that's not enough time. At 55mph, you are overdriving your headlights because the range on the headlights does not give you enough time to react to an emergency.

This is why I recommend upgrading to Sylvania Silverstar Ultra headlights or HID headlights, as both headlights have a range of 1,000 feet and are wide-arc beams meaning they will illuminate everything in a 150-degree arc in front of your car out to a distance of 1,000 feet straight forward or 150 feet to the sides. That will give you ample time to react to a deer crossing.

Good information, but what about the ones in the morning and early evening hours.

On our way to a Church visit yesterday morning on our bikes, we had a deer jump up and out from the side of the road and narrowly miss the lead bike, where there is one deer there are 3 or 4 more, so I immediately slowed down just to see 4 more along the side of the road in the brush, luckily they ran the other way.

Deer are all over this time of the year, day and night, so being on a bike we are more aware of the situations around us, does this make us bullet proof, definitely not, but increases our odds.

GOD Bless,
jerry

WingMan, doesn't matter what time of day it is...Everyone from Ninjas to Businessmen tout the importance of being aware of your surroundings...The truly good drivers are constantly aware of what is going on around them. If you happen to see me out in public, you will notice almost right away that I am CONSTANTLY looking around, never once do I look at one spot in my environment for more than a few seconds. I use my eyes and ears independently of each other to monitor my surroundings, and I scan everything up to 1/4 mile ahead of my car and up to 150 feet to the sides of my car, and I even use my mirrors and monitor traffic coming up behind me. I use that information to determine how fast I should be driving. If everyone else is passing me, that's an indicator to me that I should either speed up and do the same speed they are or move to the right. 90% of the time, I'll do the same speed everyone else is.

mnaines said "doesn't matter what time of day it is..." That was exactly my point.

You sound like the perfect driver to me, have you ever thought about teaching others to be safe as well?

GOD Bless,
jerry

I was very surprised while driving from Antioch Shopping Center to Price Chopper @ 64th Street, on Antioch Road, I encountered a deer crossing Antioch Rd. right in front of me and had to slam the breaks on and thank goodness it was at 2pm and traffic was not heavy, as people behind me seen it as well and stopped too, to let the deer cross the street. I was totally surprised to see the deer in that area, as it is a very busy area, with businesses and houses on both sides of the street there.

WingMan, I would gladly give drivers education, but I don't think the police or my insurance would like that.

The count of dead deer on the I-35 corridor between 152 Hwy & the Paseo bridge is now up to 9.

The peak of the "rut" hasn't even started yet. I bet the count will hit 20 before the end of November. Please don't be one of the remaining 11 vehicles that are put out of commission due to inattention.
