IN BLACKFACE?!

Robert Downey Jr. plays a black man in the new movie comedy "Tropic Thunder." Essentially Downey is in blackface which was an ugly and racist practice that was popular amung many white performers in Hollywood back in the day. So is Downey dead wrong for doing this in 2008 or does he get a pass for creativity for showcasing his brilliance as an actor?

1. Creativity.. it is comedy.. grab a sense of humor..
2. I didnt see anyone questioning Eddie Murphy playing white men in his movie.

I’ve not heard you or any other person (white or black) question the portrayal of whites by blacks. (Eddie Murphy, Dave Chappelle, The Wayans brothers……) Why are you trying to make an issue of this now when you have remained silent in the past?

I agree with the above comments whole heartedly! I have NOT seen the movie, but the trailer has him say "I am a guy, who is playing a guy, who is playing a guy." This is what the character said. Getting upset about this is just as silly as mentally challenged folks getting upset about the use of "retard" in the movie. It is a slang term now a days and it does not mean what it once did. I wish people would get a scense of humor and laugh at ourselves!!!

I was simply trying to fine out the motivation behind a film critics comments on a particular film. If I had known it would turn into a political slash and cut session to see how many raw nerves we could step on I would not have asked the question.

kbrewer- You should have just ignored JohnKJR's comment. He makes EVERYTHING a platform to profess his political views.

If "retarded" is just a "slang" term (it is not, it describes my beautiful 16 year old son that has Down Syndrome) then why is saying the "N" word such a bad thing? Hmmm?

BasehorLady - It’s not what we are called, but what we answer to that limits us. Do not let the limitations and small mindedness of others limit you are your son’s dreams.

Shawn Edwards, I and most people think it's time for you to get another job. Because you sure are not doing a very good job of what you are doing now.

When you give 0 popcorn bags, that's the ones i'll go see.

Also with all your reviews, you'll notice race where is stand in your popcorn bags.

I kind of wish WDAF would give you the walking papers.

I just read the review of this movie in Ink. The reviewer had this to say: "It's a series of jokes that use stereotypes to expose how hollow and stupid stereotypes really are."

Enough said!!!

Thanks for ALL of the comments! But please check out the "Tropic Thunder" review Russ and I gave today on FOX 4. We both actually loved the movie and praised Robert Downey Jr's performance. It's brilliant. He walks the line but it's a terrfic performance. In my "Tropic Thunder" Chat with the Stars which aired on Thursday, August 14th I touch on the negative history of blackface buttalked one on one with Robert Downey Jr.and Ben Stiller (co-writer and directer)about the role. In the past I have blasted Eddie Murphy for not only playing white but an Asian as well. If done tastefully it's cool. I thought Murphy's performances in "Norbit" were herrendous and he played African Americans and an Asian. I gave the move 0 popcorn bags. I think "Tropic Thunder" is a brilliant satire and gave the film 5 popcorn bags! What do you guys think of the movie? I LOVED it and downey nailed it thanks in large part to Brandon T. Jackon (an actual African American) who shares the majority of the scenes with him. Funny, funny stuff although very much politically incorrect.

I'm one of the movie critics here at FOX 4. I love my job, and I love movies! When I was a kid growing up in Friendship Village, I turned my bedroom into a film studio and made my own movies. I actually won a couple of student filmmaking awards. But, I really got into it for the girls. Naw, I really have a great appreciation for the cinematic arts. I'm going to use this blog to tell you all the stuff I don't have time to tell you about on television. And, I can't wait to hear what you think about the movies I review or the stars I talk to out in Hollywood.
