The gang violence has gotten so bad in Helena-West Helena AR, that the town voted unanimously to go to a 24hr curfew.

The citzens there are scared to death, the children sleep on the floor due to all the stray bullets. This area is one of the poorest in the country.

The Mayor says you can sue us if you want

Police Chief Fred Fielder said the patrols have netted 32 arrests since they began last week in a 10-block neighborhood in this small town on the banks of the Mississippi River long troubled by poverty. The council said those living in the city want the random shootings and drug-fueled violence to stop, no matter what the cost.

ACLU lawyer says it violates some constitutional rights, but failed to answer when asked if you she would live in these neighborhoods.

What do you think?

Majority rules.
Suspension of civil rights occurs periodically throughout this country. It's a fact Jack.
The ACLU needs to quit supporting criminals.
It's a suspension, not a termination.

I suspect the innocent people won't mind being subject to unlawful stops and questioning at all.

snoopy2,

Allow me to correct you...
I suspect the innocent people, representing the vast majority, won't mind...

Majority rules, always has.
What part of "unanimously" is misunderstood?

Yeah, in situations like this there is usually at least on liberal hold out, protesting the suspension of constitution rights... but in this case there wasnt.. that pretty much speaks for itself.

Jewells another poster says he's been there and the whole town is REALLLY poor.. in todays economy I can only suspect that they have gotten even poorer... poverty breeds crime.
The citzens are sick of living in a war zone... flat out sick of it.

I know that I would temporarily give up some rights if my children had to sleep on the floor in an attempt to avoid stray bullets.

Too bad we don’t have citizens with a like mindset here in KC, perhaps a curfew and more aggressive policing would help curb our street violence. In stead we get prayer vigils. Ever notice how, in our high crime areas, community leaders are always asking for more money for community projects and not for more police? The KCPD has instituted dozens of community projects designed to bring police and citizens in crime-ridden communities closer together for better communication and crime reduction. It hasn’t helped. Violent crimes are still occurring and the number of crimes, particularly homicides, being solved has actually decreased; so much for community interaction and cooperation. It seems to me Helena, Arkansas has the right idea.

Yeah a Army reservists was shot two nights ago at a south KC car wash. Don't get me wrong as I pray often, but you still have to get up and do something to get results. Gangsters often turn to the bible in prison , but out on the streets they turn to the gun.

Yeah but one has to wonder why a Army reservists would be at a car wash at 3:00 a.m. and what a fancy ride he had, while he or it lasted. I say fire all the police so that citizens can go under civil protection. Then, I say arm all the citizens of age and correct mental capacity with AK 47's supplied and paid for by the city, fight fire with fire, in defense for lives, homes, and families, it is in our constitutional right. Other option wait til they kill you or your kids first, what would you prefer. I like the AK 47 promotion, myself.

Actually a 24 hr curfew might be excessive. A dusk until dawn curfew would be much more appropriate. A number of years ago one of the Kansas City Police Chiefs policy was, "any vehicle, containing three or more males, under age 21, were to be stopped and questioned. All occupants were to provide ID, and that ID was to be checked for outstanding warrants and criminal histories." This policy proved quite unpopular with some "community leaders and activists". However, the net result was that the number of drive by shootings and other criminal activities dropped while the policy was in place.

Personally I think it was a great policy, and one that should be considered again. (By the way, I got stopped and questioned one morning when I was driving my carpool to work. We had to be there at 2:00AM, so three guys in a car fit the policy, the only thing was the youngest one of us was 35!)

That is true a 24 hr curfew is to be expected in a war zone area. If that is the case where are their police? Fire them if they can not control the streets. Great information about the three male policy, I wish they would use and enforce that everwhere.
